REPORT 2011 OF THE MICROCREDIT SUMMIT CAMPAIGN

More than 128 million of the world’s poorest families received a microloan in 2009 -an all-time high, according to a report released on March by the Microcredit Summit Campaign. Assuming an average of five persons per family, this means that loans to 128 million poorest clients affected some 641 million family members, which is greater than the combined population of the European Union and Russia. 3RD EUROPEAN MICROFINANCE AWARDED FOR BEST IMF IN VALUE CHAIN FINANCING

Being an important tool for poverty alleviation, the Luxembourg Ministry of Foreign Affairs – Development Cooperation Directorate, launched the first European Microfinance Award in 2005. In 2010, the 3rd European Microfinance Award on “value chain finance” focused on stimulating and promoting inclusive financial schemes that contribute to the evolution of value chains in developing countries. The idea was to support project development from the initial inputs through to the commercial outputs, enhancing the livelihoods of people at all levels of the value chain. From three finalists, all with excellent projects, the prize of EUR 100’000 was awarded to Harbu Microfinance Institution from Ethiopia, in a ceremony hosted by the European Investment Bank on the 30th November 2010.

MICROFINANCE TRAINING OFFER

The training offer consists of several separate courses, each one being the object of an optional examination. The course M1 delivers the theoretical concepts and fundamental issues of microfinance. Those with the prefix M2 have a very practical orientation operating on the basis of exercises and case studies. Finally, M3 stands for master courses providing indepth knowledge of complex issues as well as management competencies. At present, only the M1 on microfinance initiation and the M2 on performance analysis are available in English.
